Birth of Yatra

The Birth of Yatra: A Journey Back to the Roots
On the serene banks of the sacred Narmada River in Bharuch, Gujarat, Nitin Tailor grew up immersed in the spiritual warmth and natural rhythm of small-town life. It was a peaceful world, yet his ambitions stretched far beyond the horizon.

Driven by a restless intellect, Nitin embarked on a path of high academic and professional achievement. He completed an educational stint in Sweden, mastered Technology Entrepreneurship through Stanford University’s Venture Lab, and distinguished himself by winning top honors at Startup Weekend events organized by NASSCOM and IIM Ahmedabad. Soon enough, he found himself in India’s tech capital, Bangalore—working at a multinational corporation, earning a comfortable salary, and stepping firmly into corporate success.

The Turning Point: The Call of the Narmada
Despite the plush corporate lifestyle, accolades, and financial security, something felt incomplete. As time passed, the glitz of the big city began to fade, replaced by an overwhelming urge to return to his roots and serve society.

Listening to that inner pull, Nitin left his cushy job in Bangalore and boarded the first train back to Bharuch. Returning to his hometown, he initially used modern technology to address the pressing health and educational needs of local rural communities. Fueled by the success and honesty of this early work, he founded the Serve Happiness Foundation—a social venture designed to help the rural poor recover from regressive socio-economic conditions by supporting grassroots changemakers.

Nitin’s efforts quickly gained national and global recognition:

2014: Awarded the Late N. Ramarao Gold Medal and Entrepreneur of the Year at IIIT Bangalore.

March 20, 2014: Invited to the United Nations Headquarters in New York as a founding member of the World Happiness Consortium (an international initiative led by Dr. T. Hamid Al-Bayati) to celebrate the International Day of Happiness.

June 20, 2015: A defining milestone arrived when former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam launched and signed the Narmada Prerna Yatra report during the inauguration of the Social Incubation Centre at EDII Gandhinagar, strongly endorsing Nitin’s focus on rural development through entrepreneurship.

The Genesis of Prerna Yatra
The driving force behind Nitin’s work was a deep desire to inspire young people toward nation-building activities that extended beyond India’s urban centers. To pay tribute to his motherland, he conceived the Narmada Prerna Yatra.

The concept was transformative: take youth on an immersive journey across the Narmada region, connecting them directly with local heroes who had built successful social and entrepreneurial ventures.

For the young participants, the experience delivered a powerful message: social entrepreneurship must adapt to the unique lifestyles of rural and tribal settlements. These environments present complex, everyday challenges that demand creative, resilient solutions.

A Growing National Movement
What began as an intuitive journey along the Narmada quickly blossomed into a broader movement. Driven by its success, Nitin expanded the concept to cover other major river regions across Gujarat:

Sabarmati Prerna Yatra: Inspiring youth across the Ahmedabad region.

Tapi Prerna Yatra: Fostering social entrepreneurship in South Gujarat.

By focusing on core sectors—such as education, healthcare, sustainable livelihoods, eco-tourism, agriculture, and social enterprise—Prerna Yatras continue to grow into a national movement, empowering young Indians to build an inclusive nation from the roots up.
